How to do I do cool backgrounds in gimp?

I like putting poems on top of edited photos. If you have your own collection of photos you can choose your favourite landscape or picture and edit it by changing the colouring, lighting, or you can pile photos on top of each other. If you are able to use gimp proficiently, that shouldn't be difficult to do.
