Fedora 15 seemed to have frozen on boot.?

I was installing some stuff, mostly from source. I was trying to get wine up, from source. And gimp 2.7.2. I installed the build essentials, and when i tried to install more of wines build essentials, archive manager refused to show files in a tar file i downloaded. So I logged out, to reboot. But it froze, so i did a hard shutdown. Then I tried to reboot, it froze on the loading screen with fedoras emblem. What happened, and is there a way to reboot without a hard shut-down. I don't want to replace my hard-drive if it fails from all this hard shut-downs.
