How do I delete the background of any picture by using GIMP?

I'm trying to make a picture by combining other pictures with people in it to make a group of people in one picture. But I'm trying to get rid of the background in each picture. How can I delete it? And by the way how can I scale the picture to make it bigger/smaller?
